Well, there’s not much to say at this point. I mean, there are plenty of practices during preseason camp before the first game against Miami (Ohio), and with the addition of several key incoming freshman who didn’t enroll early, things can change. And likely will change.

Philly Brown is listed as one of the top wide receivers, but last season he was on the outside. Now he’s in the slot. In fact, the entire wide receiver situation is muddled. I have no clue as to who will step up to be the big play guy, but my bet is on freshman Michael Thomas.

Also, former tight end Reid Fragel is now the starting right tackle, for the moment. Freshman Taylor Decker and others will have something to say about that during preseason camp.

As for the defense, it’s looking Silver Bullet strong, as usual.

Last night against the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians’ starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez lasted just 4-1/3 innings while throwing a whopping 99 pitches to 28 batters. Of those 99, just 58 landed in the strike zone. Jimenez surrendered seven runs on nine hits with four strikeouts, five walks and a hit batsmen as the Tribe lost 7-5 at Fenway Park.

In seven starts so far this season, Jimenez is 3-3 with 5.18 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP. He has worked 40.0 innings while allowing 23 earned runs, 41 hits and an astronomically high 30 base on balls to go along with 24 strikeouts.

One thing you can say, he’s consistently inconsistent. In his last start against the Texas Rangers this past Sunday, Jimenez pitched seven shutout innings, yielding just two hits to earn the win. He had six strikeouts, but also walked five.

It should also be noted that Jimenez fares much better at Progressive Field than on the road. While he’s thrown exactly 20.0 innings both at home and away, Jimenez has a 2.70 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP in Cleveland, while he has posted a 7.65 ERA and 2.55 WHIP outside of Ohio.

Dr. Jekell, I’d like you to meet someone. His name is Mr. Hyde.

With his herky-jerky motion to the plate, Jimenez’s pitches are all over the place. But there’s not much the Indians can do, other than to keep him in the starting rotation and constantly work on his mechanics, among other things.

Since Jimenez has three-plus years of service and no longer has any options, the Indians cannot send him down to the minors. He can be designated for assignment, which could mean another Major League team could pick him up off waivers. Or maybe somehow the Tribe’s medical staff can find something wrong with him physically to put him on the disabled list.

Other than that, the fans of the Wahoo Warriors can only hope that Jimenez returns to his 2010 form when he went 19-8 with an 2.88 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. Also that year, Jimenez pitched 221.2 innings with 214 strikes and 92 walks in 33 starts for the Colorado Rockies.

As a Cleveland Indians fan, Josh Beckett can golf as much as he wants before facing the Tribe.

Beckett, a starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, was shelled for seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings as the Indians went on to win 8-3 at Fenway Park, Thursday night.

Cleveland put up a three-spot in the second inning and added four more runs in the third, all off of Beckett.

In the second inning, first baseman Casey Kotchman plated Shin-Soo Choo with a sacrifice fly before third baseman Jack Hannahan ripped a two-out home run just over the short fence in right field to put the Tribe up 3-0.

During the four-run third, second baseman Jason Kipnis led off the frame with a solo homer to right-center that landed in the Red Sox’ bullpen. After Asdrubal Cabrera singled and designated hitter Travis Hafner drew a walk, Choo laced a one-out double off the wall in right-center that scored Cabrera. The very next hitter, center fielder Michael Brantley, drilled a two-bagger into the gap in left-center which brought home Hafner and Choo.

Brantley was the last batter Beckett faced as Andrew Miller came on in relief with one out in the third and the Indians leading 7-1. Beckett then walked off the mound to a chorus of boos.

Beckett missed a start last Saturday against Baltimore because because of soreness in the lat muscle behind his right shoulder. Turns out, Beckett was out on the golf course two days earlier.

The Indians added a run in the top of the ninth to make it 8-3 thanks to sac fly by catcher Carlos Santana that scored Kipnis, who earlier reached on a base hit.

The Red Sox scored a run in the second on Mike Aviles’ RBI single, a run in the fifth following RBI double from Daniel Nava, and Dustin Pedroia added a solo HR in the seventh.

Indians’ starting pitcher Derek Lowe returned to his former stomping grounds and lasted six innings, giving up two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk to improve his record to 5-1 on the season.

Up next, game two of the four-game series against Boston is Friday night as RHP Ubaldo Jiménez (3-2, 4.04 ERA) will start for Cleveland, and he will be opposed by RHP Clay Buchholz (3-1, 9.09 ERA). First pitch at Fenway Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.

(File Photo)

So the mayor of Columbus, Michael Coleman, would like a National Basketball Association franchise in his fair city.

Really? I guess it’s always nice to dream big.

The fact of the matter remains, Columbus is a small market that already has a winter season sport occupying Nationwide Arena. In case Mayor Coleman forgot, the city still has an NHL franchise, the Columbus Blue Jackets.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Mayor Coleman has told the NBA that Columbus wants a basketball team now that the ink is dry on the public purchase of Nationwide Arena. Coleman sent NBA Commissioner David Stern a letter last Thursday expressing the city’s desire to move a franchise here or add a new team if the league expands.

A spokeman from the Mayor’s Office, Dan Williamson, had this to say:

“Up until recently, our arena situation was not stable. Now that that changed, the mayor felt it was time to position ourselves to be on the NBA’s radar. The NBA needs to know more about us, so he has had conversations with NBA officials.”

There’s one major problem, though. NBA commissioner David Stern has said repeatedly over the last few years that the league isn’t looking to expand. That means Columbus would have to lure an existing NBA franchise to the city.

Currently, there are 30 teams in the NBA. One team wanting to relocate, the Sacramento Kings, appears to be heading to Anaheim, Calif. Then there’s Seattle, which lost its NBA franchise to Oklahoma City in 2008 and would love a new team in their city. One investor has already pledged $600 million for a new arena in Seattle.

While Columbus wouldn’t be the smallest market in the NBA, if a current franchise relocated to the Capital City, it’s still in the bottom third. With a metro population of around 1.9 million, there a seven smaller markets in the NBA with Charlotte, Indianapolis, Memphis, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Oklahoma City and Salt Lake City all ranking lower than Columbus.

Of course, neither of those cities listed above also have an NHL franchise.

So what does this mean for the Columbus Blue Jackets? Will they be around much longer? Is the handwriting on the wall? Is Mayor Coleman being proactive in his quest to bring another tenant to Nationwide Arena, so the facility doesn’t go without one someday?

All of those are very good questions, but getting an NBA team to come to Columbus seems highly unlikely.

The three-day extravaganza known as the 2012 NFL Draft concluded on Saturday with four former Ohio State players being selected among the 253 during the seven rounds while three others signed as undrafted free agents following the draft.

The first former Buckeye to hear his name called was offensive tackle Mike Adams, who went to the Pittsburgh Steelers with their 56th overall pick in the second round, Friday night. Adams was suspended for the first five games of the 2011 college football season for being a part of the “Tattoogate” scandal at Ohio State, then later tested positive for marijuana use at the NFL combine in Indianapolis.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “the Steelers laid out some stipulations for Adams to get back on their draft board, which included counseling.”

Adams eventually met those stipulations set forth by the Pittsburgh brass, and the lifelong Steelers fan was reinserted on their draft board, even with all of the baggage he’s bringing with him.

Wide receiver DeVier Posey went in the third round (68th overall) to the Houston Texans on Friday night. He missed 10 games during the 2011 season due to two NCAA suspensions, one involving “Tattoogate” and the other after it was learned that Posey had received improper benefits from a booster. In three games last season as a senior, Posey had 12 receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns after hauling in 124 passes for 1,793 yards and 16 scores in his first three years wearing a Buckeye uniform.

“The first suspension happened when I sold my (Big Ten co-championship) ring my freshman year and missed five games,” Posey said to Dale Robertson of the Houston Chronicle. “The second one happened (because) I had a job and they told me I was overpaid for it. I made mistakes. It was something I learned my lessons from and I’m moving forward. It’s made me a better man and a better person.”

With the 191st overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals selected running back Dan Herron in the sixth round. Like the first two Buckeyes picked before him, Herron was also implicated in the off-the-field issues that led to the firing of former OSU head coach Jim Tressel.

Last season, Herron played in seven games and rushed for 675 yards on 134 carries and three touchdowns. His best season as a Buckeye was his junior year in 2010 when he rushed for 1,114 yards and 16 TDs.

One of the many surprises during the NFL Draft, and a great story, was when the New England Patriots took Ohio State’s Nate Ebner with their 197th pick overall in the sixth round.

Ebner, who never played high school football while at Hilliard Davidson, is a world-class rugby player and represented the United States in both the U-19 and U-20 national teams. Ebner joined the Ohio State football team as a walk-on in 2009 and earned a scholarship before his senior season.

Listed as a defensive back, Ebner primarily played on special teams and recorded 30 tackles and one sack during his career. His stock rose when he took part in OSU’s Pro Day workouts at The Woody Hayes Athletic Facility.

“I didn’t want to expect anything and I didn’t want to get overly excited and I hoped I would get a chance to be on a team, and especially the Patriots,” Ebner said to Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe. “Words can’t describe how excited I am to be part of this organization, and you know, the fact that I got drafted, it makes me so happy and my family’s happy, and I’m just so excited about the opportunity. I’m really at a loss about the whole thing.”

Following the draft, center Mike Brewster signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars while linebacker Andrew Sweat and right tackle J.B. “False Start” Shugarts signed with the Cleveland Browns.

Urban Meyer and his coaching staff landed a pair of big name recruits on Monday as Joey Bosa and Lewis Neal both pledged their allegiance to Buckeye Nation earlier today. This comes on the heels of Alex Anzalone’s verbal commitment following the Spring Game on Saturday evening.

Bosa, a five-star prospect by Scout.com and tabbed a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, is 6-foot-5, 260-pound strongside defensive end from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Bosa is ranked the No. 2 defensive end prospect by Scout, while Rivals tabs him as the second-best strongside defensive end in the country for the class of 2013.

Along with Ohio State, Bosa also had scholarship offers from Alabama, Boston College, Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Earlier, Bosa had narrowed down his choices to four – Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State and Michigan.

Neal, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound weakside defensive end from James Hunt High School in Wilson, N.C., is rated a three-star recruit by both major recruiting services. Rivals ranks Neal as the 16th-best overall weakside end from his class, while Scout lists him at No. 28 among all middle linebackers in the nation.

Neal had several offers to choose from including ones from Clemson, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest among others.

Anzalone, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker from Wyomissing Area High School in Wyomissing, Penn., chose the Buckeyes over other schools like Florida, Penn State, and Notre Dame among others. He’s a four-star recruit by both Scout and Rivals. Scout lists him as the tenth-best outside linebacker in the nation for the class of 2013, while Rivals has Anzalone at No. 16 in the country at his position.

As one of the fastest-rising prospects in the country while being one of the nation’s top linebackers and the most coveted recruit from the state of Pennsylvania, Anzalone had tons of offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Boston College, Colorado, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, Stanford, Syracuse, Temple, USC, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.

Whew! It would of been easier just the list the schools that didn’t make an offer to Anzalone.

With Bosa, Neal and Anzalone on board, the 2013 recruiting class comprises of 13 with quarterback J.T. Barrett from S.H. Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Tx., tight end Marcus Baugh from J.W. North High School in Riverside, Calif., cornerback Cameron Burrows from Trotwood-Madison High School in Trotwood, Ohio, running back Ezekiel Elliott from John Burroughs School in St. Louis, Mo., offensive tackle Evan Lisle from Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio, quarterback/athlete Jalin Marshall from Middletown High School in Middletown, Ohio, defensive tackle Billy Price from Fitch High School in Youngstown, Ohio, safety Jayme Thompson from Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio, and cornerback Eli Woodard from Eastern High School in Voorhees, N.J.

To much of the delight of the 81,112 fans in attendance, the 2012 LiFE Sports Spring Game turned out to be the aerial show head coach Urban Meyer said it would be as the Scarlet squad defeated the Gray team, 20-14, at Ohio Stadium, Saturday afternoon.

Scarlet was led by quarterback Braxton Miller, who completed 24-of-31 passes for 258 yards. He was intercepted once by Adam Griffin and was nearly picked off a second time, but the ball bounced off the chest of the defender and into the arms of tight end Nick Vannett. Miller’s favorite target turned out to be freshman wide receiver Michael Thomas, as he totaled 12 receptions for 131 yards.

The Scarlet squad took the opening possession and marched 65 yards in eight plays that was capped off on Carlos Hyde’s 1-yard touchdown plunge. During that drive, Miller was 4-of-4 passing for 51 yards while tossing the ball to three different receivers. Following Drew Basil’s successful PAT attempt, the Scarlet led 7-0 with 7:43 left in the first quarter.

Directing the Gray team, quarterback Kenny Guiton threw for 191 yards on 17-of-26 passing with a touchdown and an interception. Guiton led his team down the field on Gray’s first possession as well, but Kyle Clinton’s 36-yard field goal was wide-right.

The Scarlet squad took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 41-yard field goal by Basil. Then coach Meyer stopped the scrimmage and had Basil try another field goal, this time from 45 yards, which was blocked by Adam Bellamy. Basil then made kicks from 45 and 53 yards out, before coming up short on two attempts from 58 yards away.

The Gray team got on the board right before halftime as Guiton hit Devin Smith on a 28-yard TD pass during a drive that lasted just three plays and covered 51 yards. On the snap before the touchdown play, the Gray team faced a third-and-2 at the Scarlet 43 and Guiton’s pass fell incomplete, but a 15-yard facemask penalty kept the drive alive.

With only 37 seconds left on the clock before intermission, Miller led the Scarlet squad by going 4-of-4 passing that covered 50 yards in four plays. Basil then connected on a 32-yard field goal as time expired to give Scarlet a 13-7 lead at the half.

Later in the third quarter following a very short punt of 14 yards by Ben Buchanan, the Gray team set up shop at the Scarlet 22 yard line and needed just four plays to take a short-lived 14-13 lead following Guiton’s 4-yard TD run with eight seconds left.

The Scarlet squad responded on their next possession by going 65 yards on eight plays that ended with a 7-yard touchdown run by Rod Smith to put his team up 20-14 with 5:28 left in the game. Before Smith’s TD scamper, Miller hit Thomas on a 23-yard pass play as the Scarlet faced a second-and-8 at the Gray 30.

Not wanting to do the 2-3 hour community service project at Buckeye Grove as the losing team, Gray marched 49 yards in five plays, but on first-and-10 at the Scarlet 16 yard line, Guiton’s pass was intercepted by Christian Bryant at the 2.

The Scarlet squad was able to run out the clock from that point.

Smith led the Scarlet in rushing with 47 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Bri’onte Dunn ran the ball seven times for 32 yards to lead the Gray.

While Thomas had 12 receptions for 131 yards for the Scarlet, Philly Brown has seven catches for 90 yards for the Gray.

Defensively, linebacker Ryan Shazier led the Scarlet with eight tackles and two tackles for loss. For the Gray, safety Orhian Johnson led his team with seven tackles.

The 15th and final “practice” of spring football drills concludes with the 2012 LiFE Sports Spring Game pitting Scarlet vs. Gray, Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at Ohio Stadium is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised on BTN with Tom Hart and Derek Rackley in the booth and Lisa Byington reporting from the sidelines. The game can also be heard on your radio dial with Paul Keels, Jim Lachey, and Marty Bannister calling the action on the 65 outlets statewide via the Ohio State IMG Sports Network. Additionally, the game will be available on both Sirius 91 and XM 91 satellite radio.

Weather:
According to 10TV’s chief meteorologist Chris Bradley, you might get a little wet while tailgating as rain showers will move through Columbus in the morning, but at game time the skies will be mostly cloudy with a temperature of 55 degrees.

Coaching Staff:
SCARLET: Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tom Herman will lead the Scarlet squad and he will be joined by assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers, defensive line coach Mike Vrabel, and tight ends/fullbacks coach Tim Hinton. GRAY: Defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Luke Fickell will direct the Gray team along with cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs, co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Ed Warinner, running backs coach Stan Drayton, and wide receivers coach Zach Smith

This Year’s Spring Game Rules:
The spring game will feature four, 10-minute quarters. In the first half, the clock will start and stop as it normally would for an NCAA-sanctioned football game. The second half, though, there will be a running clock. Also, there will be no kickoffs as each drive will start at the team’s 35-yard line and all punts will be fair-caught. One last rule, all quarterbacks will be off-limits from any contact. There will be a 15-minute halftime that will include a performance by The Ohio State University Marching Band.

Doctor, Doctor:
On the injury front, about 20 players have dealt with some sort of medical issue during spring camp, though nothing is serious. Four possible starters on defense missed practice on Wednesday due to injury/illness and they include: LB Ryan Shazier, LB Curtis Grant, S C.J. Barnett and S Christian Bryant.

About the 2012 Ohio State Buckeyes Football Team:
A total of 48 lettermen return from the 2011 team (25 on offense, 20 on defense and three specialists) that includes 18 starters, nine on defense (DL John Simon, DT Johnathan Hankins, NG Garrett Goebel, DT Adam Bellamy, LB Storm Klein, CB Travis Howard, CB Bradley Roby, S Christian Bryant, and S C.J. Barnett), and seven on offense (QB Braxton Miller, FB Zach Boren, WR Corey Brown, WR Chris Fields, OG Jack Mewhort, OG Andrew Norwell, and TE Jake Stoneburner). Along with 21 seniors, nine true freshmen from the 2012 recruiting class who have enrolled early participated in spring camp and they include: OL Jacoby Boren, OL Taylor Decker, RB Bri’onte Dunn, QB Cardale Jones, LB Josh Perry, DL Se’Von Pittman, DB Tyvis Powell, LB Luke Roberts, and WR Michael Thomas. The rest of the freshman class will report this summer.

Draft Party:
On Thursday morning, Scarlet coach Herman and Gray coach Fickell along with the rest of the staff conducted a draft for the spring game. As you can see below, Herman went with a lot of “O,” while Fickell opted for a lot of “D.” Regardless, both teams plan to air it out in the passing game. Here are the draft results:

Once again, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and his staff hit another home run on the recruiting trail as they received their tenth verbal commitment for the class of 2013 as J.T. Barrett pledged his allegiance to Buckeye Nation earlier today.

Barrett, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound dual-threat quarterback from S.H. Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, is rated a four-star recruit by both major recruiting services, Scout.com and Rivals.com. Scout ranks Barrett as the seventh-best overall quarterback from his class, while Rivals lists him as the sixth-best dual-threat signal-caller for 2013.

Barrett had several offers to choose from including ones from Arizona, Baylor, LSU, Nebraska, and Texas Tech among others.

“I feel Ohio State is the place for me,” Barrett said to ESPN.com, “and I felt if I would have went somewhere else, I would be missing out. I wanted to be a part of the Buckeye family.”

Earlier in the week, Ohio State picked up No. 9 for the class of 2013 when three-star defensive end Tracy Sprinkle from Elyria High School in Elyria, Ohio, tendered his verbal commitment on Tuesday.

With Barrett and Sprinkle on board, the 2013 recruiting class comprises of tight end Marcus Baugh from J.W. North High School in Riverside, Calif., cornerback Cameron Burrows from Trotwood-Madison High School in Trotwood, Ohio, running back Ezekiel Elliott from John Burroughs School in St. Louis, Mo., offensive tackle Evan Lisle from Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio, quarterback/athlete Jalin Marshall from Middletown High School in Middletown, Ohio, defensive tackle Billy Price from Fitch High School in Youngstown, Ohio, safety Jayme Thompson from Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio, and cornerback Eli Woodard from Eastern High School in Voorhees, N.J.
