This Saturday, December 14th, it will be announced in New York this season’s winner of the Heisman Trophy.
The finalists are quarterbacks Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois, Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, A.J. McCarron of Alabama, Jameis Winston of Florida State and running backs Tre Mason of Auburn and Andre Williams of Boston College.
Winston is the favorite to win the award on SportsBettingDime.com and most of the sports betting sites. The young quarterback is 1/150 to take home the famous bronze trophy.
Winston, who led Florida State to the BCS National Championship and ended with 3,820 yards and 38 touchdowns, is the favorite to win this award and can become the second straight freshman to do it after Manziel won it last season.
Winston would be the third quarterback of Florida State to win the Heisman, joining Charlie Ward (1993) and Chris Weinke (2000). If he gets the award, it seems that the second place would be between Johnny Manziel and Jordan Lynch.
Manziel, who passed for 3,732 yards and 33 touchdowns, is looking to be the second player to win it in straight years since Ohio State’s Archie Griffin did it in 1974 and 1975. His running numbers were down this season compared to last year, finishing with 686 yards and eight touchdowns.
Lynch set a quarterback record by running for 1,881 yards and threw for 2,676 yards. He finished with a total of 46 touchdowns, 22 rushing, 23 passing and one receiving, but when Northern Illinois lost in the MAC Championship against Bowling Green his possibilities were reduced.
This would be the twelfth time in the last thirteen years that a quarterback wins the Heisman. In that span only running back Mark Ingram Jr., of Alabama, won it (2009).
Andre Williams became the first player since 2008 to surpass the 2,000 yards after running for 2,102 and 17 touchdowns; meanwhile Mason, who will be with Auburn at the National Championship, ended with 1,621 yards and 22 touchdowns.
All six finalists are expected to attend the ceremony, which would match 1994 for the most in Heisman history.
