Court Report: Buckeyes to take on Terrapins tonight in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

Tonight, the No. 5/3 Ohio State Buckeyes take on the Maryland Terrapins in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Tip-off at Value City Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised on ESPN with Dave O’Brien and former Buckeye Bob Knight. The Buckeyes enter tonight’s non-conference match-up with a 6-0 overall record with wins over Morgan State (89-50), Ohio (79-69), at then-No. 17 Marquette (52-35), American University (63-52), Wyoming (65-50) and North Florida (99-64).

In Ohio State’s last game against North Florida, five Buckeyes scored in double figures led by junior center Amir Williams’ 18 points as OSU easily defeated the Ospreys, 99-64, at Value City Arena in Columbus on Friday.

Along with Williams’ 18, junior forward LaQuinton Ross added 17 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Amedeo Della Valle also scored 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range and a pair of free throws. A pair of senior guards, Aaron Craft tallied 16 points with five assists, and Lenzelle Smith Jr. contributed 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.

For the game, Ohio State shot a blistering 69.2 percent (36-52) from the field, 14-of-23 (60.9%) from beyond the arc, but was just 13-of-22 (59.1%) from the charity stripe.

The Terrapins are 5-2 overall with wins over Abilene Christian (67-44), Marist (68-43), Northern Iowa (80-66), Providence (56-52) and Morgan State (89-62). The two losses were to Connecticut (78-77) and Oregon State (90-83).

In Maryland’s last game on Nov. 29, Jake Layman scored a career-high 27 points and Evan Smotrycz had 19 points and 12 rebounds as Maryland beat crosstown foe Morgan State 89-62.

This will be the sixth meeting between Ohio State and Maryland. The Buckeyes are 3-2 all-time against the Terrapins. The last time these two teams met on the hardwood was on Dec. 30, 1985 at St. John Arena in Columbus. Dennis Hopson scored 16 points, Brad Sellers netted 14 points and pulled down 19 rebounds, Curtis Wilson scored 12, and Jerry Francis added 10 as the Buckeyes won 78-66. Len Bias led the Terrapins with 23 points.
