Despite shooting woes, Ohio State eventually runs past American University 63-52

Despite shooting just 35.7 percent from the field, No. 8 Ohio State defeated American University, 63-52, at Value City Arena in Columbus, Wednesday night.

Two starters notched double figures in points led by junior center Amir Williams, who scored a career-high 16 on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. Junior guard Shannon Scott added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and dished out four assists.

But the other three starters – senior guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. along with junior forward LaQuinton Ross – scored just 17 points on 4-of-20 shooting from the floor. Craft had nine points, Ross and Smith Jr. chipped in four each.

The game was tied at 20-all with 3:46 left until intermission before Ohio State closed out the half on an 8-3 run that included a layup by Craft just before the buzzer sounded.

The Buckeyes led by just nine with 6:22 remaining in the contest after American University’s Jesse Reed scored on a layup that made the score 51-44.

But Ohio State went on a 9-0 run in the next four-plus minutes and after a high-flying dunk from junior Sam Thompson, OSU held its biggest advantage at 60-44 with 1:35 to play that sealed the win.

For the contest, Ohio State was 20-of-56 (35.7%) from the field, 3-of-16 (18.8%) from three-point range, and 20-of-29 (69.0%) from the foul line. American University was 21-of-46 (45.7%) from the floor, 4-of-12 (33.3%) from beyond the arc, and 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the charity stripe.

Up next, Ohio State hosts Wyoming, next Monday night. Tip-off at Value City Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised on BTN.
