Here we go, another exciting season of Ohio State football.
And if you thought the expectations were high last year in Urban Meyer’s first as head coach of the Buckeyes, how about the expectations this season where they are astronomically high.
I know lots of Buckeye fans who don’t like the No. 2 ranking because of the increase in pressure that puts on the players, but I have the opposite opinion in that a No. 2 ranking means you likely can control your own destiny in the race for national prominence from day one.
Ohio State is a team that learned last year that they can win every game they play and that confident attitude should carry over to this season and it definitely should start this Saturday.
I would have preferred that OSU played SEC foe, Vanderbilt, in the opener as was scheduled, but the Commodores got out of the contract and San Diego State took over the opening and bumped Buffalo to the opener because the first game date wasn’t available for San Diego State.
Buffalo isn’t a bad first opponent in that they return all of the offensive starters from last season.
Two problems with that however. One is that all of those offensive players went 4-8 last year and likely none of the Buffalo starters could be on the first unit at Ohio State.
As a former head high school football coach, I thought opening night was a challenge because of the unknown and this will be the case for Urban Meyer.
Are we really as good as we look in practice or scrimmages? Are we better at a phase of the game where we think we need work?
Those answers may not be completely understood after Saturday but at least it’s on the real stage.
Ohio State will use it’s huge advantage in talent depth to win and likely do it with some ease which should give multiple players a chance to showcase their talents.
Buffalo isn’t a major challenge but will be a good first opponent for a team that has the loftiest goals ever. The next two opponents, San Diego State and on the road at California, will tell more about this Buckeye team but for now it’s the thrill of opening day.
