More than 5,000 fans showed up last night at Ohio Stadium for an open practice conducted by the Ohio State football team on a perfect late-summer evening.
So, what did we learn from this? Not much.
Most notable was that junior defensive tackle Cameron Heyward was in some sort of walking boot. According to Doug Lesmerises of the Plain Dealer, head coach Jim Tressel said “he should be back soon.”
Offensive line has seen it’s share of changes since spring ball, and it appears that redshirt junior Andy Miller will start at left tackle. Other probable starters include: junior Justin Boren at left guard, sophomore Mike Brewster at center, junior Bryant Browning at right guard, and senior Jimmy Cordle at right tackle. Sophomore J.B. Shugarts, who is battling Miller for the LT spot, will also see some playing time among others.
At running back, the Buckeyes return sophomore Boom Herron and junior Brandon Saine. Herron was Beanie Wells’ backup last season as Saine has battled with various injuries over the last two years. Both will get playing time, as well as true freshmen Jaamal Berry and Jordan Hall.
The linebacking corps seem to be set with junior returning starter Ross Homan, senior Austin Spitler and junior Brian Rolle.
Hard to tell at this time who will be the starting cornerback opposite Chimdi Chekwa as fifth-year senior Andre Amos and junior Devon Torrence are both vying for the job.
In other news:
Ralph Gray Decker, the man accused of sucker-punching OSU linebacker Tyler Moeller at a bar in Florida last month, had his charge officially upgraded from a misdemeanor to a felony on Monday.
According to Jamal Thalji of the St. Petersburg Times, a warrant was signed by a judge on Friday, and Decker turned himself in at the Pinellas County jail at 12:26 a.m. Monday.
Decker was originally arrested on a misdemeanor charge of battery the night of the attack.
