Sophomore starting pitcher Alex Wimmers leads the Big Ten in strikeouts with 72 during his 57.0 innings of work, and was named the Co-Big Ten pitcher of the week on Monday.
Wimmers carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning of a 6-1 triumph over Michigan State on Friday night before allowing a lead-off double and a bunt single. Wimmers threw his third complete game of the season while striking out 11 Spartan batters, posting double-digits for the fourth time this season. The right-hander improved to 6-1 on the year and claims his third weekly accolade of the season and his career.
Wimmers is sharing the honors with Indiana’s Eric Arnett, who hails from Pataskala, Ohio, and is a graduate of Watkins Memorial High School. Arnett held Iowa to just two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 11 batters in a 5-1 romp over the Hawkeyes.
This week the Buckeyes will host Kent State, Wednesday evening, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET at Bill Davis Stadium, before traveling to W. Lafayette, Indiana, to take on Purdue (15-15, 5-3 Big Ten) for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday night. Both the Saturday and Sunday afternoon games that start at 12:00 p.m. ET will air live on the Big Ten Network.
Upon returning home, Ohio State will have a nine-game homestand which includes weekend series vs. Northwestern and Michigan, starting next week.
