With the Reba McEntire/Kelly Clarkson concert at Value City Arena, Thad Matta’s basketball Buckeyes will open the 2008-09 season at St. John Arena hosting MEAC member Delaware State.

Matta, now in his fifth year at Ohio State, will not face a stiff challenge against the Hornets, who head into the game with a record of 1-3.

Delaware State played at Dayton, Wednesday night, and lost to the Flyers 62-42. Donald Johnson, the Hornets’ leading scorer averaging 13.5 points per game scored 11, while Arturo Dubois had nine points and eight rebounds for DSU.

The Hornets other two losses have come at the hands of Division II Cheney (67-64) and Lehigh (76-58). Delaware State’s lone win came against DII Wilmington (71-59).

The Hornets’ do not have one player over 6-foot-7, so Ohio State’s 7-foot freshman center B.J. Mullens, along with forwards, 6-foot-8 sophomore Dallas Lauderdale and 6-foot-9 junior Kyle Madsen, should be able to have their way inside against the smaller Delaware State squad.

Through four games, the Hornets are averaging 58.8 points per contest while shooting 42.1 percent (82-of-195) from the field, 34.4 percent (21-of-61) from three-point range, and have been outrebounded 144-140 for a margin of -1.0.

In the Buckeyes’ only exhibition game of the season, sophomore Evan Turner and freshman William Buford both scored 17 points as Ohio State defeated Walsh, 90-63, at Value City Arena last Thursday.

Up next, the Buckeyes will host Bowling Green, Monday night. Tip-off at Value City Arena is scheduled for 8:00 p.m., and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
