Tressel’s punishment for QB Smith: preseason conditioning

The punishment that will be handed down by head coach Jim Tressel to quarterback Troy Smith, who skipped a class back in June to attend a football camp hosted Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair will be extra conditioning drills in preseason camp.

“I think we’ll go at first with a preseason plan of what we’re going to do,” Tressel said. “And then based upon how you handle the first part of what we do, that will have something to do with how much further it goes than that. But have we defined anything from a game standpoint? No.”

Smith, who will serve another one-game suspension for taking cash from a booster last year, will sit out the season-opener against the Miami RedHawks on September 3 at Ohio Stadium. He also sat out the Alamo Bowl last December.

Earlier in the week, Ohio State announced the Smith had not violated any rules of the NCAA by attending the camp.

Quarterback Justin Zwick will start against Miami, and it’s assumed that he will also start the second game against Texas. But with Smith paying back the money he took from the booster as required by the NCAA, after he serves the suspension against Miami, he should see a good amount of playing time against the Longhorns.

Todd Boeckman, a redshirt freshman from St. Henry, Ohio, should also see some time taking snaps against Miami.
